History of Russell Clinic
In 1937, prior to World War II, Dr. Alfred Burgess Russell (known as AB) was commonly referred to as one of the only GP’s consulting south of Adelaide. He would see his patients from a room in the front of his home on Coromandel Parade, which became known as ‘the doctors house’. This house still stands today.
After the war ended, in the early 1950’s, Dr. Bob Russell, the son of Dr. AB Russell, started consulting with his father. They were shortly joined by Dr. Callum Archibald and Dr. Murray Holmes. The four of them formed an unnamed clinic in a small red bricked house where Drakes’ supermarket stands today. In the early 1960’s, they were joined by Dr. William McEwen, and the red brick house was soon outgrown. In 1968 a purpose-built clinic was formed on the north side of the Drakes’ complex and shortly after in 1970, Dr. John Clapp joined. Dr. Richard Boorman was next in 1985, followed by Dr. Haydn Bunton in 1990 and Dr. Anita Spole in 1993.
In the late 1980’s, after Dr. Alfred Burgess Russell and Dr. Bob Russell passed away, Russell Clinic gained its name, in honour of them.
Due to the ever growing local population and need for a larger health service, construction began on a new purpose-built location, and in 2005 we moved to where we are today: 202 Main Road, Blackwood. Along with Dr. Haydn Bunton, Dr. Sean O’Toole joined in 2005, followed by Dr. Simon James in 2010, then Dr. Gibraun Brijmohan in 2017 and Dr Jennifer Moan in 2018, forming our five current practice principles.
